{"id":175,"date":"2018-10-13T20:30:16","date_gmt":"2018-10-13T20:30:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ullenhallhistory.org\/home\/?page_id=175"},"modified":"2018-10-13T20:30:16","modified_gmt":"2018-10-13T20:30:16","slug":"ann-munden","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/ullenhallhistory.org\/?page_id=175","title":{"rendered":"Ann Munden"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">ULLENHALL SCHOOL DURING WORLD WAR II<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">My sister and I were evacuated to our Grandparents, who lived at Greenacres (between Henley &amp; Ullenhall) at the outbreak of war.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">I must have started at the beginning of the Autumn Term, I suppose, as I was already at school in Birmingham.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">There were two classes. Mrs Barrett had the younger children in the small room at the front of the building, and Mrs Friend taught all the rest of us in the big room\/hall \u2013 she was the Head, and really lived up to her name, but stood no nonsense!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">I didn\u2019t realise\/remember that the evacuees came from two schools. Those details didn\u2019t interest children I suppose, but I do remember the village boys fought them from time to time, after school.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">We had lessons at school in the mornings one week, and went down to the Village Hall in the afternoons for art, knitting, music &amp; country dancing etc, and the evacuees did the reverse, then we swopped over the next week, they were at school in the mornings.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">I\u2019m sorry I\u2019ve no idea how long this went on, it didn\u2019t seem long to us, but I can imagine how long it was for the teachers \u2013 having been one all my working life.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">They really were extremely happy days, and we were very well taught.
